Postcard No 34: Life by the River

Today’s little postcard sketch captures two coots checking out the nesting sites along the river’s edge.
I wanted to catch the evening light as it warmed the tops of the rushes and added a soft glow to the water.
I’m still trying to come to grips with the little tin of watercolours. I really miss my amazing Daniel Smith tube set that was stolen while on holiday last year. I find it much easier to get the depth of colour with tubes than pans.
Some fine liner marks at the end give a bit of definition and help pull it together. The coots are not quite right but I was sketching them from memory and if I upsized this subject I’d pay a lot more attention to getting the birds right!
