Postcard No 44: Life by the River
I’ve seen some very lovely and colourful ducks in my travels but teh Australian Wood Duck has to be one of my favourites. It’s restrained elegance always catches my eye with it’s beautiful patterns and muted colours.
There are lot’s of these ducks at the waterfront walk in Franklin and it’s easy to get close as they are always checking out the passersby to see if there’s any food in the offing.

I went with watercolours for this one because I think it suits the patterning and restrained colours. I also have a small round brush I use with the watercolours and I felt I could get the detail better with this one rather than the 1 cm flat I use with the gouache.
After painting for a few decades you get a feel for which medium will suit a subject best!
If I were doing a larger size I would be happy to use acrylics or pastels but I like the watercolours for these small bird studies.
