Postcard No 45: Life by the River
I’ve been waiting to catch the wooden boats going out with new rowers and thus morning they did. Two crews went out and they sat for awhile having some instructions before they set off upriver. It was a chance to capture them .

Here they are just setting off. The oars are not quite in sync yet but by the end of the walk they were doing pretty well for a new crew.
Franklin is a good spot to find lots of different subjects: dog walkers, bird feeders, walkers, rowers, boaties and the wooden boat makers.
This was done quickly with acrylic gouache and my trusty 1cm flat brush…no real detail, just a few suggestions for hair , a cap, tops and life jacket.
Look for the small details that help to suggest movement.
I liked the rippled reflections and the wash as the boat slipped through the water as well as the drips from the oar blades. They all help to suggest the forward movement of the rowboat.
