Seedpods: Postcard No 90

Life by the River

Today’s postcard is a simple watercolour sketch of some waratah seedpods.

I love the showy, brilliant red crowns of waratah that cover the bushes at this time of year. My mum has one in her garden and there’s a couple in various gardens along the river road as well.

Even though the flowers are more conventionally beautiful I find the seedpods more interesting.

There are a lot of colours in the outer husks and some lovely indentations providing contrast inside the pods.

Then there are the cast shadows that help anchor the pods to the paper.

All in all a good subject for a quick sketch.

It’s not always the obvious that’s the most interesting so it’s worth digging a bit deeper when choosing what to paint.
