Life by the River
This is another of my underpaintings but I liked it so much I thought I would share it as a postcard. Sometimes simplicity is the best.
I know this isn’t by the Huon River but if you follow the river down to where it reaches the sea and then keep going south as far as the road takes you and then walk for 2 hours further south this is where you end up…South Cape beach…a really stunning place.
I did this one on a scrap of yellow matboard with some Art Spectrum indigo ink and a dropper. It was really fun to apply the ink. I filled the dropper and then gently released the ink as I dragged it across the matboard…more ink for the darker areas and then dragging it without squeezing for the broken linework.

I plan to add some clear pastel primer and the pastel over the underinking so tune in tomorrow for the pastel version.

I love using these Art Spectrum® Pigmented Inks because they are acrylic based which means they won’t fade unlike traditional dye based inks.
This is important if I’m going to use them in an underpainting where some will show through. I don’t want the finished painting to end up changing and fading in places over time.
They also dry really fast which means I can get on with adding pastel quickly.
They have a very intense colour and I can layer and let them run and intermix to create interesting effects .
I also use them as a base under thicker acrylics. Love their versatility!
