The Boatshed: Postcard No 123

Life by the River

I’m an artist who likes numbers. I always check out the clock when I wake up at night to see if it’s a pleasing number…anything that is a sequence is good and when all the numbers are the same it’s even better. Today’s postcard is number 123 so I find that very pleasing…although not so pleased with the actual postcard.

Still it’s a good memory. I popped my head into the boatbuilding and mending shed the other day to see what they were up to and asked if I could take a photo. I only stuck my head in because the doors were wide open and I hadn’t seen them open when I’d walked past any other day. It was full of interesting shapes and materials and a few boats and a lot of repair and woodworking kit.

I asked if I could take a photo and the men conferring over the next stage of the boat refurbishment kindly said yes.

I didn’t try to get all the gear in…just a hint of the clutter inside.

I can’t recall seeing a rowboat with glossy black trim before . Blue , red, green and yellow are more common …or a simple varnished wood.

The figures look about as wooden as the boat so more practice needed there!

Happy to have this little vignette of the boatshed in my sketchbook though so I’ll forgive my poor figures.

I really like that boat! It looks like it could skim.over the water wonderfully swiftly.

It’s a lovely craft. Obviously a work of love.
