Upscaled Postcard : No 103

Life by the River

Today I was very busy in the garden in the morning and then finishing a larger version of Postcard No 87. i originally did this in pastel but chose a 70x100cm canvas for the upscaled version and acrylic inks and paints.

The pastel postcard is fresher and more immediate than the acrylic because I did it quickly and it’s quite small so there was no room for details.

I had to work pretty hard to get the foreground to come together in the large version and I think I’ll go back in and try and light up that middle ground tree bit more.

I deleted the jetty from the acrylic version because I wanted to focus all the attention on the interplay of light and shadow in the reeds and grasses at the water’s edge.

That acrylic version is beautiful, leaving the jetty out allowed my eyes to wander over the scene in a much better way with no distraction. Big ticks from me!

Glad you approve of the jetty decision. I put it in and then decided to scrub it out. I’m glad I did.

Thank you so much Loretta. Those grasses took me some time I can tell you. My husband saw it at the very ugly stage and had no hope I could pull it off and was very surprised with the final result. I was a bit ambivalent midway through but happy with the end result.
