Now for the pastel: Postcard No 119

Life by the River

I promised the pastel version of yesterday’s postcard so here it is. It’s only a small postcard size painting but I really feel it captures the rugged beauty of South Cape beach and Lion Rock…although I didn’t make the rock high enough at it’s highest point. You can see where the original yellow matboard has been allowed to show through and the ink underpainting made it easy to establish the darks.

This will definitely get an upsize to a much larger painting sometime in the future.

I have only ever seen this in photos but like the colours and the clever way you have brought them in with underpainting-which I don’t really understand about- and the use of your paper colour.

Well my class also had some questions about underpainting and why I use it so you are not on your own. 🙂
