Life by the River
Living here by the Huon River is a wonderful life but we do sometimes leave it’s banks and head off to visit other places.
A few months ago we spent some time in Iceland which was an amazing experience. I absolutely loved the landscapes that unfolded as we circumnavigated the island. The roads were easy to drive on, the scenery was stunning and we got the time to do some hiking and lots of photography.
Travel really excites me with the opportunity to see new landscapes and cultures but arriving home again is always a joy as well.

This is a small postcard of a little creek we hiked along to a waterfall.
It was done on a gessoed mdf panel that I did a wash in using acrylic paint before adding a layer of pastel primer. Then I worked over it with soft pastels.
I like this way of working because I can add the primer either smoothly and evenly or,as I did here, in a more painterly, directional manner so that extra texture is created for the pastel.
A fun little painting that reminded me of another landscape on the opposite side of the world.

Here’s my original reference photograph and the acrylic underpainting.
