Big Trees: Postcard No 132

Life by the River

Yesterday we headed out to the Grove of Giants for a visit to the big eucalypt trees. It’s a 40 minute drive from our house up the Huon River, across the Russel River and out the Denison River Valley.

It’s a beautiful short walk through the rainforest with eight or nine very tall, wide and majestic eucalyps to visit on the round circuit. Mum came with us and, at 89, showed how a hip replacement can really inject new life into a person. She happily stepped over branches, clambered up and down the steps chainsawed into the fallen logs across the path and had a lovely time.

Some of the trees had fascinating root systems. This one had a very long “toe” reaching out from one side.

There was a mass of greenery everywhere. Mosses on mosses, ferns, laurels, myrtles, eucalytus and even more mosses.

There’s Mum in her red jumper heading up the track.

A nice reminder of a morning in the rainforest with it’s restorative silence and restful greens.
