Life by the River
Heading into a new year is always interesting. Will I be able to head down those paths I’ve chosen for this year or will I get side tracked, distracted and end up at an entirely different destination. I’d really like to complete my year of postcards and I feel that the break this month has renewed my spark.
I also want to come to grips with my cold press laminator for collagraph prints. It’s a tricky beast and I need to spend a good chunk of time in the studio playing and experimenting.
Today was easy though…I looked down at my feet as we finished our walk and there it was, a beautiful tangle of leaves, bark and twigs just waiting to be painted.

Eucalyptus leaves make for wonderful colour and texture, especially when they’re layered with twigs and peeled bark strips.
I used watercolours and a white gel pen for some extra highlights. The paper in this sketch book is cream so the gel pen come sin handy if I want a pure white.
This was quite a meditative postcard and I felt very relaxed painting it. No expectations of a great sketch means it’s less daunting tackling a more complex subject.
I hope your 2025 is full of creativity, happiness and wonder.
